Tom and Sarah’s first steps to self sufficiency…?

Hello dear readers

How are we all? I hope a good Christmas was had by everyone. As expected here: a lot of food was consumed, beverages were drunk, sofas were napped in, and most importantly family and friends were seen. The loyalty to my diet wavered at points especially on the 4 hour drive to see my uncle, cousin and grandparents where roadside services are limited in cuisine.

On the brink of another new year Sarah and I have been making plans for 2018. Part of this planning has been for the garden (our last place was a flat, where there was no garden. Now we have the luxury of a house with a small garden and intend to make the most of it). As I mentioned in a previous post we are both keen on making food go further, and making things from scratch. I have been interested for a good while in growing veggies. My nan once laughed when I asked the point in growing plants that you couldn’t eat as this was something that her dad regularly said. (She then elaborated to say that my great granddad was a very keen vegetable gardener, and as with many people living in war time Britain really mastered the art of making something from nothing.)

Our current garden is modest and slabbed. Seeing as we moved in October and the first few weeks were stupidly busy with work and sorting the house out, we didn’t have time or weather to do much with the garden. Its main use over the last month has been to saw up firewood for our log burner and has at times looked more like a lumberjack’s yard. However with a decent supply of wood now cut and split ready to heat our home, we have been looking towards warmer weather, and deciding what to grow in our limited space.

We have decided to focus our growing on veg. We’re going to get some planters in the spring along with a selection of seeds that we’ve already picked. We will then see how we get on with growing veg in our small garden. In the grander scheme of self sufficiency we are taking very small baby steps, but know knows what these baby steps will lead too.

Thanks for reading people, I hope this ramble has been entertaining and perhaps useful. We will let you know how we get on with our ventures!

Hello! I'm Tom, and I write on two pages here on wordpress. My first is TomsCrohnsDiary where I share my experience of living life with a condition called Crohn's Disease. I started this page to raise awareness of Crohn's, as well as helping out people who have been diagnosed. My more recent page is all about self sufficiency, sharing ideas that I pick up with my fiancee Sarah. If you have any questions then feel free to message or comment and I will answer! Have a great day people. KBO
