Well things have gone quiet in the world of Tom – owing to an as yet unexplained and rather substantial pain in the ribs and back, I’m being forced to sit my butt down and not do much. That being the case I have had more time to read and write on here.

This morning I was taking a look through a few pages on the Crohn’s and Colitis Facebook page when I saw some pictures praising some athletes at the Olympics who have just won medals in their sports. The first post I saw on this was sharing Siobhan-Marie O’Connor’s brilliant Silver medal in the 200m freestyle medley at this year’s Olympic games in Rio. This is a fantastic achievement in its own right for the 20 year old. But what adds another level to this story is that when you read into Siobhan-Marie’s story you find that she has also been diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis as well.

As well as Siobhan-Marie, we have 19 year old Kathleen Baker (right) from the USA, who competed for the 100 m Women’s back stroke and walked (or swam) away with an impressive silver medal. Reading through a little about Kathleen I found she has been battling Crohn’s Disease, which at times has posed a threat to her sporting career. Despite this huge set back, with all of the problems that Crohn’s comes with, she has managed to carry on her training and push herself to this phenomenal level in her field.
I think you’ll agree that both of these women are true inspirations to manage to achieve so much with these conditions stacked against them. Just wanted to share their achievements here on my little page.
